Anything can happen in the BVBL. 508 Athletics came into the game with a 3-3 record and missing their 2 leading scorers in Drew Dykstra and John Henault. However they found a way to grind out a W over previously undefeated Flying Rhino. Flying Rhino was lead by Eddie Capstick with 20 points, Ryan Turbide added 14 and Andrew Punch 13 in the defeat. 508 Athletics was lead by the Medfield connection of Tyler Frasca (19 points) and Phil Designoria with 19 points, and the steady defense of Andrew Calzone and Kevin Salvaggio. Flying Rhino concludes a very successful season with a 6-1 record in their inaugural year. While 508 Athletics ends the season above .500 at 4-3.
Blazers 67, Rusty Aries 51
With rookie sensation Corey Gomes nursing an injury and out the lineup. Rusty Aries fell to the Blazers in the 2 PM game. Andrew Groth continued a big season by throwing in 18 in defeat while Dan Tessier added 11. The Blazers were lead by the stellar inside play of Zach Valliere who had 27 points in the victory. Jay McKinney added 19 while Rob Elliot chipped in 12. The Blazers end the year at 6-1, while Rusty Aries are always dangerous in the playoffs and are 2-5.
Birdmen 69, Woolies 55
Under the radar is the only way to describe the season the Birdmen are having. At 5-2 they will be a team to be reckoned with in the playoffs. Sam Fanfan lead the way for the Birdmen with 29 points, while Jay Snow chipped in 13 and Mike Geoffrey added 11. The Woolies were lead by the inside play of Tim Swenson who had 16 points and the Mike O'Leary who chipped in 13 in defeat. The Woolies end the year at 1-6 heading into the playoffs.
FBGM 57, Chargers 49
FBGM are now the winners of 3 straight. Behind the shooting of Jon Snediker (23 points) and the inside out play of Luke Brownell (15 points) FBGM posted their 3rd straight victory after starting the season 0-4. The Chargers were lead in defeat by Doug Roberge with 25 points and Nick Burnett with 11. They will enter the playoffs 2-5 while FBGM will enter 3-4.
Worcester West 71, Sweet Sassy Molassy 43
On July 12 2009 Joey McCann of Bohica dropped 40 points in a game versus the Red Raiders. This single game scoring record stood for over 2 years until yesterday when Dave Doulette of Worcester West dropped 42 in their victory. Utilizing a steady midrange game, transition finishes, and the 3 ball he had 25 at the half and was able (with some last minute force feeds) to get over the hump in the second half. Joe Laroche added 12 for Worcester West while Kevin Van Slette lead Sweet Sassy Mo with 12. Worcester West enters the playoffs at 6-1 while Sweet Sassy Molassy will head in at 2-5.
D&E Painting 58, Blood Sweat and Beers 31
Despite the scoring of Mike Keefe (14 points) and Nick Brown (10 points). D&E Painting had too much firepower for the Blood Sweat and Beers crew. Max Masucci with 22 points lead a balanced attack for D&E that saw both flying Farrer brothers in double figures (Dave with 10, Chris with 11) and Shawn Atherton chip in 10 of his own. D&E Painting continues to be one of the most decorated franchises in the league and will enter the playoffs 6-1. BSB still had the second end of a double header to play...
Aggro Crags 64, Ham Sandies 54
With Larissa Oleynik looking on in the first row Neil Polucha and the Aggro Craggs held off a pesky Ham Sandies bunch. The story of this one was Brennan Bennett who scored 34 points and Greg Walker who added some inside balance with 14. A (very playoff eligible) Mike Perrault chopped in 11 in the victory. For the Ham Sandies Dan Main had 14, while Dan Bessa added 13 in the defeat. The Sandies end their season at 1-6 and will enter the playoffs. The Craggs still had another game to play...
Aggro Craggs 60, Blood Sweet and Beers 46
Bennett picked up where he left off in game 1 with 22 more points in the night cap as the Aggro Craggs busted it open early in the second half. Greg Walker had another 13 and Mike Perrault another 13 in the victory. Blood Sweat and Beers was lead by the interior play of Kevin Smith (12 points) and the shooting of Bob Chalmers (15 points, 2 technical fouls) who kept them in the game early. Blood Sweat and Beers will end up 1-6 and in the playoffs, while Aggro Craggs improve to 5-2 introducing a litany of tiebreakers.

In the first game of a marathon day of basketball The Aggro Crags held off Sweet Sassy Molassy in a hard fought contest. The Aggro Crags jumped out to a 26-12 halftime lead behind the outside scoring of Mike Perrault (18 points) and flying Bennett brothers Brennan (13 points) and Tyler (12 points). Sweet Sassy Molassy was lead by Mike Mahoney with 13 points. and Jack Mahoney with 9. The Aggro Crags advance to 3-2 and will conclude their season with another double header next week. Sweet Sassy Molassy falls to 2-4 and will take on Worcester West.
Aggro Crags 67, Woolies 62
Behind 24 points from Brennen Bennett and 19 points from Greg Walker- the Aggro Crags held off a number of runs by the Woolies to post their second victory of the day. Tyler Bennett also tossed in 16 for the Crags in the victory. The Woolies were lead with 17 points from Joe Reidy and 15 from Brett Corey. Mike O'Leary added 14 in the loss. The Woolies will conclude their regular season next week with The Birdmen, while The Aggro Crags will play another twinbill.
Blazers 49, Sweet Sassy Molassy 48
Playing their second game of the day Sweet Sassy Molassy showed great fight with Jack Mahoney scoring 24 points and Mike Mahoney adding 13. The Blazers hung tight behind the outside scoring of Rob Elliot (15 points) and the thunderous rebound dunks of Zach Valliere (14 points). Trailing by 1 with 6 seconds to go The Blazers entrusted the ball to Mike Howe who dribbled the length of the floor before finding Valliere for a buzzer beating turn around jumper for the win. The Blazers advance to 5-1 and will tangle with Rusty Aries while Sweet Sassy Molassy will take on Worcester West.
BOHICA 74, Chargers 62
The Chargers behind the scoring of Doug Roberge (22 points) and Joe Regan (14 points) gave BOHICA all they could handle in a sweltering mid afternoon matchup at the Douglas Municipal Center. The Chargers however did not count on the scoring punch of Ryan Cain (35 points) and Mike Balderelli (22 points). Mitch Bajema also tossed in 10 to stem the tide of the Chargers barrage of 3's. BOHICA advances to 6-0 and will take on Team Ramrod next week- while The Chargers at 2-4 will take on FBGM.

In a strong candidate for game of the year- Team Ramrod held on in overtime to town a pesky and undermanned 508 Athletics team. 508 was lead by the scoring punch of John Henault (29 points) and Andrew Dykstra (32 points) and the defensive scrappiness of Jon Wood and Andrew Calzone. Meanwhile Ramrod was lead by the sharp shooting of Bennett Knowlton (26 points) and the inside scoring of Dave Mack (14 points). Ramrod (5=1) will take on BOHICA in their season finale next week. While 508 Athletics will face Flying Rhino.
FBGM 60, Ham Sandies 26
FBGM ran their win streak to 2 straight with a commanding win in the 6 PM game. Dan Main paced the Ham Sandies in defeat with 14 points. FBGM was lead by the play of Mike Worrick (16 points) and Decarlo Anderson with 11 points. FBGM (2-4) will take on the Chargers next week in a game with huge seeding implications. The Sandies at 1-5 will take on The Aggro Crags.
Worcester West 68, Grizzlies 42
Dave Doullette's 17 points paced West Worcester in their matchup with The Grizzlies. Joe Laroche contributed 12 while Dan Laroche added 15 and Derek Johnson 13 in the a well balanced attack. For the Grizz Drew Dunn scored 12 early points while Sean Hanlon added 13, the Grizzlies were paced by Troy Lerner with 17 in his final game before departing for college. Worcester West runs their record to 5-1 and will take on Sweet Sassy Molassy next week while. The Grizzlies conclude their season at 1-6.

The Birdmen improved their record to 4-2 behind the scoring of Sam Fanfan (16 points) and Niko Bryant (8 points). Chase Milanese also chipped in 11 for the Birdmen. Rusty Aries was paced by Andrew Groth with 19 points and Dan Tessier with 9. Rusty Aries will play the Blazers next week while the Birdmen will play the Woolies.

The first game of the day was the game of the day. The D&E Painting backcourt of Max Masucci (17 points) and Corey Brunner (12 points) lead the way to a 46-45 victory. Team Ramrod was paced by Russ Braithwaite with 16 points and Cedric Kukamensah with 15 points. A last second three pointer for Team Ramrod rimmed out, vaulting them out of the ranks of the unbeaten. Team Ramrod will face 508 Athletics next week while D&E Painting will face YMCM.

In game of poorly thought out abbreviations. FBGM posted their first win behind the strong interior play of Decarlo Anderson. with 13 points. Matt Davis added 9 points and Jon Snediker chipped in 8. YMCM did their damndest to get into the win column behind the hot shooting of Matt Valianti (15 points) and Peter Judge (8 points). YMCM will take on D&E Painting next week. While FBGM will take on the Ham Sandies.

Sean Hanlon chipped in 13 for the Grizzlies in defeat while Scott Rhodes added 13 and Troy Lerner had 12. Blood Sweat and Beers will ride their 1 game winning streak into week 6 against Flying Rhino. While The Grizz will tangle with Worcester West.
Worcester West 44, Rusty Aries 43
Worcester West got back in the win column in the 5 PM game behind the play of Dave Doulette (14 points) and Dan Laroche (12 points). Rusty Aries were lead by Andrew Groth (10 points and a number of boards) and Corey Gomes (11 points). Brian Whitten hit a few deep threes to keep them in the game. Rusty Aries would be undone in the final seconds however by 2 ill advised plays under 20 seconds- a rough turnover and a rushed heave by a non three point shooter. Rusty Aries will take on Birdmen next week. While Worcester West will face the Grizzlies.

Eddie Capstick (18 points) lead an undermanned cast to the victory over The Birdmen who were also short handed. Andrew Santana added 12 and Curtis Hickson added 13 in the victory. For the Birdmen Jay Snow lead the way with 10 points while Jeremy Bridge chipped in 9 in the defeat. The Flying Rhino will take on Blood Sweat and Beers next week. The Birdmen will face Rusty Aries.

Brett Corey had 15 points for the Woolies in their victory in the 7 PM game. Mike Mawdsley dropped 8 points for the victors. Sweet Sassy Molassy were paced by Jack Mahoney with 12 points. They will return to action in a twin bill next week with games against The Aggro Crags as well as a game with The Blazers. The Woolies will take on Aggro Craggs.

Worcester West's 13 game winning streak was halted in the 2 PM game by the surging Flying Rhino squad. John Genkos (17 points) and Eddie Capstick (13 points) lead the way offensively while Emmanual Tarwoe and Alex Celluci provided solid pressure defense to run the Rhino's to 4-0. Worcester West was lead by Dave Doulette with 17 points and Joe Laroche with 15. Congrats to Worcester West who won 13 straight heading into this game...one shy of a league record. The strong 2 man punch of Andrew Groth (25 points) and Corey Gomes (27 points) carried the day for Rusty Aries as they run their record to 2-2. Game of the day without question. The Woolies bolstered by some new additions came out attacking and were lead by Ryan O'Leary (14 points) and Mike O'Leary (19 points), in addition to the flying O'Learys- Scott Elie posted 10 for the Woolies in defeat. The Blazers were lead by Jay McKinney who posted 21 points (all from outside) and Rob Elliot with 16. They were also given a boost by Sam Wilsey (10 points) who also for some reason brought a gaggle of 11 year old girls to the game. The Blazers improve to 3-1 and will tangle with The Chargers next week. While The Woolies fall to 0-4 and will face Sweet Sassy Molassy.

The Aggro Craggs post their first victory in league play with a 10 point win over the Chargers. Brennan Bennet lead the Craggs with 25 points and Greg Walker chipped in 14 in the victory. The Chargers were lead by Nick Burnett with 18 points in defeat. The Craggs are 1-1 and will take on BOHICA next week. The Chargers are 2-2 and will face The Blazers.

Spurred on by the inside play of Armen Antramegian (11 points) and the slashing of Pat Makridakis (11 points) Sweet Sassy Molassy came out firing and lead halfway through the first half. BOHICA answered behind the offense of Justin Aldrich (23 points), Mike Balderelli 12 points and Joey McCann who tossed in 13. On the defensive end McCann made his presence felt with double digit blocked shots. BOHICA advances to 4-0 and will play the Aggro Craggs next week. The score was deadlocked at 28 at the half and this game had all the makings of a defensive struggle. However D&E Painting turned it on in the second half to the tune of 46-17 and a 74-45 victory. Dan Main lead the way for Ham Sandies with 19 points in defeat. D&E were paced by the inside play of Jason Beard (23 points) and Max Masucci with 15 mostly on drives to the rim. D&E will face Ramrod next week in a game with serious playoff implications while Ham Sandies will take on 508 Athletics.

Flying Rhino won their third straight with a victory over Rusty Aries. The Aries squad was lead by Andrew Groth with 18 and 21 from rookie sensation Corey Gomes. Flying Rhino (whose roster expanded considerably as the game went on) was paced by John Genkos with 19 and Eddie Capstick with 17. They also got solid inside play from Ben Landers with 10 points. Rusty Aries will try to get back in the win column next week with The Grizzlies while Flying Rhino will face fellow undefeated Worcester West in an afternoon showdown.
D&E Painting 55, FBGM 40
D&E Painting was paced by Max Masucci with 31 points as they cruised to victory over FBGM. Cory Brunner added 10 in the victory for D&E who were also aided by the play of Chris Farrer on the boards. FBGM were lead by rookie big man Decarlo Anderson with 18 points and the shooting of Matt Davis (12 points). D&E will look to continue their winning ways next week versus the Ham Sandies while FBGM will tangle with 508 Athletics.

Despite a prodigious scoring outburst by Lou Bessa (28 points) YMCM fell to 508 Athletics in a game that was close for most of the first half. 508 was paced by the interior presence of Matt Kneece with 17 points, and balanced perimeter scoring including Tyler Frasca with 10, Phil Disignoria with 11 and Kevin Salvaggio with 10. 508 will take their (1-2) record into battle against FBGM on Sunday while YMCM will try to hang with Team Ramrod.
Team Ramrod 72, Ham Sandies 50
Team Ramrod utilized the inside scoring of Dave Mack (24 points) and the outside scoring of Bennett Knowlton (22 points) and were spearheaded by the floor play of Dave White (11 points). The Sandies put up a good fight lead by Dan Bessa (20 points) and Justin McCann (18 points). Team Ramrod will face YMCM next week, while the Sandies will tussle with D&E Painting.

Chris Foley Sr. added 12 points for Worcester West and is believed to become part of the first father-son combination to ever score double figures in league play. Dave Doulette chipped in 13 for WW. Ben Pettit lead BSB with 20 points and Mike Keefe added 11 in the defeat. Worcester West will take on Flying Rhino next week in a game with huge playoff seeding implications while Blood Sweat and Beers will face the Birdmen.

The good news for the Grizzlies was getting out to a 9-0 lead. The bad news was they were outscored 79-35 the rest of the way as the Birdmen found their offense in a big way. Sam Fanfan scored 32 in the victory as Jay Snow added 16 and Jeremy Bridge and Niko Bryant both dropped in 11. For the Griz Sean Hanlon lead the way with 16 points in the defeat. The Birdmen will face Blood Sweat and Beers next week while The Griz will take on Rusty Aries.

BOHICA is starting to round into form. They used a ridiculously balanced attack to defeat the Blazers in the marque game of the night. Joey McCann and Keenan Burke-Pitts had 17 each, while Brian Vayda added 14 and Mitch Bajema and Justin Aldrich tossed in 13 each as well. Even old "Long Sleeve" Leonelli chipped in from downtown. The Blazers were lead by Zach Valliefre with 18 points including a ridiculous put back dunk and Rob Elliot with 15. BOHICA will play Sweet Sassy Molassy next week The Blazers will dance with the Woolies in the battle of Jay McKinney's past and present team.
Chargers 49, Woolies 43
Doug Roberge had 26 in as the Chargers ground out a tough victory over the Woolies. The Woolies were paced by Brett Corey with 17 and Kyle Dean with 16 (and a huge contribution on the glass). The Woolies will return to action next week against the Blazers while The Chargers will face the Aggro Crags.

The game of the day was a back and forth affair between D&E Painting and 508 Athletics. D&E were lead by the scoring of Max Masucci (23 points) and the play of rookie Jake Doucette (13 points), Doucette in particular made a lot of plays down the stretch to seal the victory. 508 Athletics got great production from rookie John Henault (19 points) and Tyler Frasca (15 points). D&E Painting (1-1) will take on FBGM next week, while 508 Athletics (0-2) will tangle with YMCM.

Ham Sandies 71, YMCM 38
Dan Main's 19 points lead the way for Ham Sandies in the expansions team's first victory. Justin McCann dropped in 14 while Dan Bessa also added 14 in the win. YMCM was paced by Mike Sardonini with 12 points. Erich Slagal added 9 points in the loss. YMCM falls to 0-2 and will face 508 Athletics next week. Ham Sandies improve to 1-1 and will take on Team Ramrod.
Worcester West 61, Birdmen 42
Despite 13 points from Jay Snow and 12 points from Sam Fanfan the Birdmen fell to Worcester West in the 7 PM game. Worcester West lead by Dave Doulette 21 points and Derek Johnson 18 points in a decisive victory. Birdmen fall to 1-1 and will face the Grizzlies this week. Meanwhile Worcester West who avenged their only loss ever in this league this week will take on Blood Sweat and Beers.
Sweet Sassy Molassy 41, Chargers 29
In a sloppy 8 PM affair Sweet Sassy Molassy held off The Chargers to run their record to 2-0. Kevin Van Slette (8 points), John Bertram (7 points) and Jack Mahoney (9 points) lead the charge for Molassy. While the Chargers were paced by Doug Roberge with 10 points. Sweet Sassy will play the Aggro Crags next week while Chagers will face the Woolies.
Flying Rhino 86, Grizzlies 53
Flying Rhino came out hot and stayed that way in their victory over The Grizz. Eddie Capstick (19 points) and John Genkos (13 points) lead the way with newcomer Ryan Turbide adding 12 points in the decisive victory. The Grizzlies were paced by Ian Strom with 17 points and the outside shooting of Troy Learner with 7 points. The Flying Rhino will return to action next week against the Rusty Aries while Grizzly nation will take on The Birdmen.
Players of the Week:
Dave Doulette, Worcester West. Doulette paced Worcester West with 21 points in a victory over The Birdmen. His mid range and 3 point contributions helped open the gap in the second half.
Andrew Groth, Rusty Aries. 21 points in a hard fought victory. Groth utilized a series of strong takes and jumpshots, and rebounded in victory.

Flying Rhino 68, Ham Sandies 25
Opening Day in the BVBL and the new season was kicked off in the freshly minted 1PM game. John Genkos (13 points) and his Flying Rhino squad started hot and stayed that way as Eddie Capstick (19 points) and Emmanual Tarwoe (8 points) paced a balanced effort. The expansion Ham Sandies lead by league veteran Dan Main (12 points) were simply outgunned in this early season matchup. The Sandies will return to action next week against YMCM while Flying Rhino will face the Grizzlies.
Chargers 40, YMCM 20
Two expansion teams met in the 2 PM game as YMCM took on The Chargers. Two early dunks by Nick Burnett (10 points) got the Chargers out and running and Doug Roberge (15 points) and some stifling D kept them in charge. YMCM got some life from Mike Sardonini (8 points) but overall there was too much Charger offense on this day. The Chargers will face Sweet Sassy Mollassy next week while YMCM will face The Ham Sandies.
Team Ramrod 59, Rusty Aries 56
The early favorite for Game of the Day. The always scrappy Rusty Aries took a commanding early lead behind Josh Dunton (11 points) and rookie Corey Gomes (18 points) but Team Ramrod lead by Russ Braithwaite (21 points) and Bennett Knowlton (17 points) came storming back. Down the stretch two Braitwaite free throws gave them a lead, while 2 Dalton Judd free throws (his only 2 points of the day) iced it for Ramrod. Ramrod will return to action next week against FBGM while the Rusty Aries will tangle with "Webster".
Blazers 59, FBGM 51
Expansion FBGM acquitted themselves well in week 1 as Luke Brownell (20 points) and league veteran Jon Snediker (18 points) kept them in the game. However the Blazers lead by big man Nate Valliere (20 points) hung right with them. Giant threes down the stretch by Rob Elliot (14 points) and free agent acquisition Jay McKinney (12 points) gave them a lead they would not relinquish. The Blazers will face the Aggro Crags next week while FBGM will face Team Ramrod.
Birdmen 39, 508 Athletics 29
Wearing the greatest shirts in league history 508 Athletics hung in with the always tough Birdmen (artists formerly known as Banner Bar). Tyler Frasca (8 points) and the inside play of Matt Kneece kept 508 in the game. However a balanced Birdmen attack of Sam Fanfan (9 points) Chase Milanese (7 second half points) and lockdown defense lead to a W for the Birdmen. 508 Athletics will return to action next week against D&E Painting while The Birdmen will tangle with Worcester West.
Worcester West 68, Woolies 34
The Champs return Worcester West posts their 11th straight win dating back to last season as they stave off Kyle Dean (14 points) and the disguised Woolies. Worcester West was lead by the outside shooting of Dave Doulette (17 points), the inside out attack of Dan Laroche (21 points) and the length and athleticism of Derek Johnson (14 points). They will return to action next week against the Birdmen, while The Woolies will do battle with BOHICA.
BOHICA 62, D&E Painting 52
Max Massuci (18 points) and Corey Brunner (16 points) lead the way from outside for the D&E Painting squad and they took a lead into the half. However bolstered by Mike Balderelli (17 points) veteren Joey McCann (15 points) BOHICA drew even in the early stages of the second half. The story however was rookie Ryan Cain who left in the first half with a nasty gash on his head. Returning to action to score 17 points in the second half (21 total) on a way to a 10 point victory. D&E will return to action next week against 508 Athletics while BOHICA will tussle with the Woolies.
Sweet Sassy Molassy 79, Grizzlies 48
The Flying Mahoney Brothers (Jack 19, Mike 18 points) lead the way for Sweet Sassy Molassy in a commanding week one victory. The Griz were paced by Drew Dunn and his 17 points and some sharp shooting from Chris Tognacci. Molassy also got production from Kevin Vanslette 15 points and Andrew Horan who chipped in 9. However the play of the day and maybe the season belonged to Armen Antranigian who let a 3 quarter court shot fly at the buzzer at the end of the first half that banked through to effectivley end any suspense in regards to whose night this way. Antranigian turned in 11 points of his own. Sweet Sassy Molassy will return to action next week against The Chargers while The Griz will tangle with Flying Rhino.
