Championship Sunday!

Semifinals Results:

(3) BOHICA 56, (2) Not Your Average Movers 49
This one had all the makings of a heavyweight fight and did not disappoint. BOHICA fought it's way to a 3 point lead at halftime behind 8 first half points from Joey McCann. While Brandon Jones had 10 first half points for the Movers on his way to (15) total. In the second half Ryan Cain turned it on for 13 of his 19 points as BOHICA made plays down the stretch. The defensive efforts of Ray Nunez and Steve Martinez for the Movers and Joey McCann for BOHICA cannot be understated in the second half. A late Derek Retos 3 (his only 3 of the game) put BOHICA ahead and Cain and Keenan Burke-Pitts (15) made foul shots down the stretch to ice it. The Movers end a successful first season 8-2 and BOHICA advanced to the finals.

Whitewater's Butler like run to the Final 4 came to an end but no without a great final fight from Andrew Musler with 17 points. Whitewater actually held a 9-2 lead to open the game, but The Bandits fought back as they did all year. Justin Aldrich (15 points) lead the charge for the Bandits but 14 from Jakyiri Simpson also helped the cause. Whitewater playing with only 5 guys had trouble keeping pace. FINALS

(5) Wet Bandits 52, (3) BOHICA 50
The Wet Bandits got off to a great early start and lead at the half 31-23, but BOHICA never down and never out stormed back to take as much as an 6 point lead in the second half. It was a slow paced an sloppy affair as The Bandits tried to get the matchups inside and get their buckets in the paint while BOHICA was able to drive and kick and get decent looks. Jaykiri Simpson was huge with 21 points as The Bandits asserted themselves late. Ryan Cain (13 points) would hit a 3 with 21 seconds left to cut it to a 1 point deficit. The Bandits would miss the front end of a one and one but BOHICA would turn the ball over returning the ball to them. This time they would hit a single free throw giving them a 2 point edge. A BOHICA jumpshot went begging as did a putback attempt. with some possibly some contact BOHICA was given the ball with 1 second to go on the baseline but in the traffic and bodies colliding the shot went long and The Wet Bandits posted their first BVBL championship with a 52-50 victory.

This is the Bandits first title however they have a proud championship legacy on the roster. Dan Laroche, Dave Douiliette, Joe Laroche, and Mike Consolmango were all part of the Worcester West team that won the 2010 championship- this gives them 2 Championships each moving them in to 2 second place all time in league history. This is Justin Aldrich's third championship. Tying him with Anthony Leonelli and Joey McCann with 3 titles each. Aldrich won the 08 and 09 titles as a member of BOHICA. The Bandits benefited from a great late season run and a deep roster which benefitted them greatly in the back to back format this year. They will no doubt return for season 7 and look to defend their title. BOHICA which has been to the championship now 4 5 times in 6 years and won 3, will also be back looking for some degree of revenge. "Give The Wet Bandits all the credit in the world, they adjusted to the type of game it was and Simpson made some huge plays." said BOHICA skipper Anthony Leonelli. When asked about the officiating down the stretch he said "There will be a time to talk about that horrible effort in the future, but tonight let's just give credit to the Wet Bandits for getting it done when it mattered most."  Jakyiri Simpson was named both the postseason and finals MVP.

With a new format this year, the final 4 and championship will be decided this Sunday at Mendon Park. The BVBL will conclude it's 6th season and parity reigns. Here are some story lines.

The South will rise again! Whitewater becomes the first team from South division since the beginning of divisional play to reach the final 4.

PLAYOFF Results plus schedules

8/7 Quarterfinal Results

Wet Bandits (5) 51, nWo (4) 40
Jakyiri Simpon had 13 including a few from long range that opened up driving lanes, and Mike Salis added 8 and some heady down the stretch plays to secure the win for the Bandits who return to the "Final 4" for the second year. nWo got 12 from Terrell Newton and 12 from Lloyd Kennedy and cap a very successful 2nd campaign. I'm sure the league is curious and wary of what talent Captain Tom Casey will unearth in year 3!

Not Your Average Movers (2) 58, Blazers (7) 38
Not Your Average Movers used their patented full court defense to open up a 1 point halftime lead to a comfortable victory. Bradon Jones posted 23 for the Movers including a thunderous jam. Quincy Nunnally added 15 helping the Movers get going early. The Blazers conclude another steady year with behind 19 from Zach Valliere.

Whitewater (1) 63, Flying Rhino (8) 46
Matt Gustas is usually content to be one of the cogs in the Whitewater machine...today he showed he is the engine with 23 points from all over. Andrew Musler added 14 and dominated the glass on both ends. Eddie Captstick had 18 from Flying Rhino

BOHICA (3) 63, Losapio Bears (6) 61
BOHICA held on through some late game trauma as Ryan Cain had 19 including the go ahead And1 with 2 seconds remaining, Derek Retos 18 and steady play from Joey McCann carried the day. Hector Heredia (16 points) capped a stellar rookie season for the Bears and Jesus Moore added a tough 14 for the Bears. A Tyler Delorey 30 footer went begging at the buzzer and BOHICA is through to the final 4.

Player of the week: Matt Gustas, Whitewater 23 points as the lone South team remaining shows they belong with the big boys!

8/4 First Round Results

Not Your Average Movers (N1) 71,  Alaskan Amigos (S8)  45
Junior De La Hoz (27 points) and Brandon Jones (30) paced the Movers offense as Steve Martinez and Ray Nunez spearheaded the defense. The Amigos got 8 from Matt Labove and 8 from Alex Suarez

Losapio Bears (N5) 75, Cellar Dwellers (S4) 60
Joey Barillo (17 points) and Tyler Delorey (31 points) lead the charge for the Bears as they advance to the quarters in their first year in league play. The Cellar Dwellers conclude an excellent campaign at 4-4. Doug Roberge had 28 and Eric Matijka easily the leagues most improved player added 19.

nWo (E3) 57, Filthy & Wet (S6) 55 OT
Despite 22 from Anthony Barry and 14 from Corey Gomes, Filthy and Wet's upset bid fell short at the hands of nWo. nWo got 17 from Terrell Newton but the true standout was Colin Carr with 15 points, and he got his hands on seemingly every pivitol loose ball of the game.  Ben Petit chipped in 10 for nWo.

Whitewater (S1) 46, 508 Athletics (N8) 36
The storm rolled in and the offense rolled out. Whitewater was paced by 11 from Andrew Musler and 10 from Matt Gustas and Matt Sefton. 508 was pace by 13 from Captain Andrew Calzone.

Flying Rhino (N7) 61, Birdmen (S2) 44
Sergio Colon had 31 and John Genkos added 21 as Flying Rhino utilized transition play and the 3 ball to claim a playoff victory over the always tough Birdmen. The Birdmen were paced by Niko Bryant with 16.

Wet Bandits (N4) 61, Madmen (S5) 59
The undisputed game of the night- The Madmen brought the Bandits to the brink behind the scoring of Cory Szklarz (23) and the all around play of Dave Farrer (10 points). The Bandits were paced by Mike Salis was 22. However late it was Joe Laroche (15) who hit a giant 3 then after a clutch drive by Bobby Chalmers for The Madmen. It was Laroche who got a tip in at the horn to propel the Bandits to victory.

BOHICA (N2) 90, Team Hurt Feelings (S7) 83
A very short handed BOHICA rode the outside shooting of Derek Retos (39 points) and the inside play of Joe McCann (22 points) to a first round victory. Team Hurt Feelings got 18 from Deco Anderson and 17 from Kyle Minto as well as 14 from Matt Bixby in defeat.

Blazers 48 (N6), Ball Don't Lie (S3) 45
Christian Horton (21 points) carried the scoring load for Ball Don't Lie- but a balanced attack and timley play making by The Blazers posted the W. Zach Valliere had 13, Corey Prior had 12 (many down the stretch) and TJ Dolliver chipped in 9 in the victory.

Players of the Week: Derek Retos, BOHICA, 39 points is good for the yearly high, as well as a very impressive outside shooting display on a chilly blustery night

Sergio Colon, Flying Rhino, 31 points and completely swung the game with his shooting and mid range game int he first half of Rhino's decisive victory.
